Intranarration

Intranarration tasked four artists invested in the meanings of materials with investigating the ostensibly immaterial: the internet.* Following lead artist Surabhi Ghosh’s prompt to consider how to use digital tools to tell stories about analogue art practices, the artists took a variety of approaches to a medium at once banal and alien. Creating art for the internet recontextualized their accustomed approaches to narrative, form, location, audience, and experience. Mistakes were made. Bugs and glitches arose. Humbling lessons were learned. But the productive friction caused by adapting to the unfamiliar allowed the artists, designer, and programmer to resurrect some of the old experimental and democratic spirit of digital technology. The resulting website—idiosyncratic; a little wonky and unwieldy; its purpose not immediately obvious; a story improvised by an unreliable narrator—draws on many of the basic tools of the contemporary online experience: zoomable maps, pattern finding and categorization, archives and data dumps, captioned photographs and looping videos, annotations and explainers, endless chains of hyperlinks and infinite scrolls.
