The Kunstverein Hannover e.V. was founded in 1832. V. is one of the oldest and most renowned of the approximately 300 art associations in German-speaking countries. It was founded by a group of private individuals to “promote the fine arts by broadening participation in them and encouraging and supporting artists,” as the new institution's first charter states. This story of citizens who created a framework for active participation in Hanover's cultural life and for a public dialogue about the art of their time is the association's most important legacy, and its spirit continues to have an impact today.
