La luce alpina
Giovanni Segantini (1858–1899) created a picture of an existence in harmony with nature in his paintings. As a painterly counter-concept to the reality of big-city existence, his work was highly valued in the art metropolises of Paris, Vienna and Berlin in the late 19th century. Segantini is one of the main representatives of European symbolism of the fin de siècle. At the same time, his outstanding position in Italian Divisionismo makes him an important innovator of painting. His simple rural figures are embedded in the eternal cycle of the seasons, of birth, existence and death. Segantini succeeds in capturing the meticulously captured Graubünden mountain world in allegorical pictorial visions of radiant luminosity. The central group of works of the Otto Fischbacher Giovanni Segantini Foundation is expanded by loans from the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz and other major works from public and private collections. The exhibition is taking place on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Christian Fischbacher company, St. Gallen, and is a homage to the Otto Fischbacher Giovanni Segantini Foundation.
