The Museum of Contemporary Art was created in 1963 when the University of São Paulo received the collection of the former MAM in São Paulo, formed by the collections of the patron couple Yolanda Penteado and Ciccillo Matarazzo, by the collections of works acquired or received as a donation during the period. from the former MAM and the awards from the São Paulo Biennials, until 1961. In possession of this rich collection composed, among others, of works by Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Wassily Kandinsky, Tarsila do Amaral, Anita Malfatti, Emiliano Di Cavalcanti, Alfredo Volpi, Lygia Clark and a stupendous collection of Italian art from the beginning of the 20th century, the new museum now meets the University's main objectives: the search for knowledge and its dissemination throughout society.
